Alexa Skills - Developer Voice And Vote

Welcome to the Alexa Skills Feature Request site! This site enables Alexa Skills Developers to request and vote on features you’d like to see in the developer toolset and services for Alexa.

To keep this site purpose-driven and actionable, we moderate requests. Here’s some guidance on how to create great feature requests that can be evaluated by our development teams. For conversation, dialogue or help, you should visit our Alexa forums. We appreciate your input.

  1. Creating Dynamic Intents as well as entities

Creating Dynamic intents at run time similar to the way dynamic entities work. This would create a lot of flexibility to adapt skills without re-deploying. Thanks for your considerations

  2. Add location awareness setting to Alexa

Currently for visitors, they have to know specific location names in order to use Alexa functionlaity correctly. e.g. simply saying "turn off lights/music" would be too ambiguous, or would result in all lights/music in the house turning off.

Add location awareness to Alexa so that, for instance when saying "turn off lights" or "play music on Sonos", Alexa can be configured to only apply the command to devices that are located the room in which that particular Alexa unit is actually located.

  3. Stateful interaction model

Imagine a situation. I have a simple game, which uses states. One state is initial, another one is game state and the last one is the end game state.

I have x amount of intents which are: launch, answer, pass a question, players amount, stop, yes and no intents. I know that these are not all of the required intents, but I want to keep this example short.

Lets say player launches the game. At this state I want user to say how many players he wants to play with. But because game answer intent has a lot of answers…

  4. Allow to add/change Intent utterances without going again into the certification process

When your skill is Live, you will identify phrases that user would use to interact with your skill. It would be nice if we could add or change utterances and build the skill model without submitting for certification process again

  5. Need a way to keep track of a private game score example backgammon

When playing a game like backgammon I would like to have Alexa store the game score. The I score would have to be given to Alexa. For example "Alexa Update Score. Steve 3 John 5". "Alexa Score" then Alexa would say " Steve 3 John 5. The user can then update the score at any time using the command "Alexa Update Score" or "Alexa Clear Score" which would clear the score. After a "Clear Score" command the Alexa response would be " No Score stored" Ability to give as many names followed by a score. Example "Alexa Update Score John…

  6. Time slot filling

I'm pretty sure this has been done a lot, but the timeslot filling needs a lot of work. The slot confirmation should automatically be able to derive am/pm and know when to ask e.g. if you ask alexa (not in the skill) to set and alarm for 12, she says "midnight or midday?", ask for 6 she says "morning or afternoon", ask for 6pm she accepts it as 18:00. Apparently this is handled in Amazon Lex, but not here. Having to code for this manually in the skill is cumbersome. Thanks.

  7. Allow phonetic markup in invocation names

When you want to use your employer's brand name as your invocation name, that name is often not a normal English word. This means that the Alexa voice service often can't understand it and the skill can't be triggered.

A workaround is to write a nonsense word that the Alexa voice service can parse as something that sounds like the brand name, but this is not guaranteed to work.

It would be incredibly useful if the invocation name could contain phonetic markup like responses can.

  8. Allow sending WakeUp event synchronously in response to a TurnOn/TurnOff directive

WakeUp event is a great addition but it could be 10 times better. Right now, you can only send it asynchronously to the Event Gateway, which requires authentication with user's Amazon account. This means more work to get it functional and also more costs for the developers.

If we could just send the WakeUp event in response to the TurnOn/TurnOff directive, directly back to the device that initiated the directive, it would make things more straight forward.

  9. Allow the connecting word "und" in German invocation names

If a brand has the connecting word "und" in its name I cannot create a skill with this connection word in the invocation names. This is very disappointing and annoying when you learn about this restriction in the certification process and did not notice it before.

I guess the connection word "und" or "and" in Englisch languages is quite common for brand names. So it will be a big improvement to allow it in the invocation name.

As a background information: I just got a reply from the support that suggested to demand this feature here.

  10. Allow changing of invocation name

Please allow changing/modification of invocation names.

Having to resubmit a new skill and losing the old users is not really acceptable. We should be allowed to be able to change/tweak the invocation name for various reasons:

    • Invocation name is not responding correctly (despite successful testing).
    • Change of company/business name

  11. Session timeout - tell me earlier

If my session has timed out, please let me know sooner rather than later. Right now, I'm able to keep adding intents, utterances, slot types, etc. but as soon as I click "Save Model" , I lose those changes because I have to refresh/log back in.

  12. Allow conditional slots in the interaction model

Similar to lex, it would be help to know whether a slot should be elicited prior to the request entering the fulfillment service. I've seen that even if a slot is required, the presence of a slot value must be checked in the lambda function and the ElicitSlot directive returned rather than interaction model determining that ahead of time.

  13. Allow users to interrupt apps and call appropriate callback

Allow developers to be able to define callbacks for user interruptions.

At the moment, as soon as Alexa start responding to the user, he must listen to the full response or quit the app.
There's no option to suppress current response and stay in the app.

    Consider an example:
Alexa: I found three news articles related to your query. Article #1: [title of the article] Article #2: [title of the article] Article #3: [title of the article]

Assume that the app allows the user to then listen to the full article. He needs to wait for the full message to…

  14. Allow eliciting slots from previous intent

Currently, if a user has matched an intent, if using a dialog model, you can elicit a specific slot.

There are times when you want to continue to elicit that slot, for example if you are playing a game that requires the user and Alexa to go back and forth with responses with the user filling the same elicited slot each time.

However if the user says Help, or let's say you have another intent for asking the score or any other question, that moves to another intent, you cannot elicit that previous intent's slot anymore. For any skill, a…

  15. List invocation name requirements

Invocation Name requirements should list that you cannot use connecting words and list those words when selecting an invocation name.

  16. Version Control for interaction model schema

A great feature would be to revision control the interaction model schema and also tool too compare it with previous versions and show history. We work as a team and another great integration would be some sort of github or stash integration .

  17. Slots that are lists

Sometimes I want to ask the user for a list of things that are of the same slot type.

    For example:
Skill: At what times do you take your medications?
User: 7 AM, 12 PM, and 7 PM

Right now, I have to ask for them individually.

  18. Better Error Explanations and Linter for Interaction Model

I am new to Alexa. I have an utility that generates interaction models. The utility had an bug that omitted values. The JSON editor stated that custom type values could not be empty. At the time, I didn't understand the error. I thought it would have been more helpful if the editor marked where the error was.

  19. Add developer specific phonetic dictionary to skill builder

Synonyms are looking to be useful as a fix for misconstrued words, but a true phonetic skill dictionary would be better than trying to force misinterpreted words as common words when Alexa doesn’t know what was said.

I’m looking for a way to submit less common words for Alexa to understand. In programming, it is becoming obvious that some esoteric or genre specific terms are missing. See http://www.enworld.org/forum/content.php?151-D-D-Pronunciation-Guide for examples of words Alexa should be able to derive from speech, but regularly misconstrues. I wouldn’t contend that Alexa needs to understand each one, but using this as a guide may…

  20. Regiment when AMAZON.Date return days in the past

Right now, it's completely random how AMAZON.Date understands whether day of the week are in the past or the future. ("What's the weather Sunday?")

Half the time AMAZON.Date return last Sunday, the other half the next Sunday.

This should be regimented. Past days should only be returned when the user say "last Sunday" or "this past Sunday", etc.

Really shouldn't need to argue for this. It's completely crazy that this hasn't be dealt with by now!
